light one up: a metal MP3 mix
This does exactly what it says on the tin. 60 mins or so of proper crushing heavy metal old and new.
You can download the full mix right here and the image should enlarge to the right size for printing if you’re old fashioned like me and still like CDs.
It starts with the sound of motorbikes revving courtesy of Serpent Throne and the opening track of their soundtrack to an imaginary biker movie, and as a bonus has Satan in the title twice. Next up are Greek stoners 1000mods with the title track from their latest 7”. Hot on their heels are With from Leeds, currently unsigned this track is one of three from their debut demo that you can download for free, details on their Myspace. I love a lengthy metal workout and at 15 mins or so this is a corker. Then it’s time to pick the pace up a little with some classic sounding doom from the USA’s Egypt, the LP has amazing artwork and definitely worth picking up if you can find it. Following is more pharaoh themed fun from Shrinebuilder, Pyramids on the Moon was a definite highlight when I saw them live just before Christmas. It wouldn’t be a stoner/doom metal mix without Sleep so here they are the classic Dragonaut. Soundgarden’s version of Sabbath’s Into the Void replaces the lyrics with a protest by Chief Sealth arguing in favor of ecological responsibility. And finally perhaps my favourite Kyuss song, Freedom Run. Even in the years when I favoured other music over metal Kyuss were a band I constantly listened to and remain firm favorite. Should they ever reform properly (no Holme, no Kyuss) I’ll be down the front.
